Gladiator 2
Robin Hood was good. Not amazing, though. There was so much more they could have done with the story about Robin Hood's beginning. Also, I don't think Ridley Scott really knew about Robin Hood before making this movie...
I won't give away any spoilers, but I'm just saying. Think of Robin Hood in your head. Good-hearted but sly, cunning, agile, thief, sneaky, mischievous, joker, flirtacious, yes? That's what I think at least. This movie didn't really deliver any of that. Except maybe the good-hearted part. Which I think they overdid.
Plus, some lines were cheesy and the scene transitions were abrupt. It just...didn't flow. I was distracted by how they made the movie and all of the little details that didn't fit. And when the craft of moviemaking (or writing, designing, etc) is distracting, then you know there's a problem. When working on the typesetting, margins, design, etc. of a book, my graphic design prof said that the artistry behind all our decisions should be transparent, so all you see is the story. So essentially, the goal is to work hard and make something beautiful so that the work you put into it is invisible. Robin Hood didn't achieve this. I don't know if I'm just being overly critical, but throughout the movie, I was wondering, "Didn't an intern read the screenplay before sending this out?! Who let this happen?"
I'm not saying it's BAD. It's definitely worth the $12 ticket. But I liked Girl with a Dragon Tattoo and Iron Man 2 more. All I'm saying is that Robin Hood the movie has so much potential, but this was just all right.
Lock&load,
Jude

Your review tallies with the other reviews I've read. Only, you've related it more to writing and a finished product. I haven't seen the movie, but you've given a better explanation for the problem than any of the professional reviews I've read. I'll probably see it anyway; it IS Robin Hood.
I felt this way about wolfman. Could have been an awesome story! Difference is wolfman sucked. I hate when hyped movies disappoint.
